WTA Webinar: The Teleport Opportunity for LEO

November 10, 2020 UTC-7

  • « User2User Virtual – The Mentor User Conference
  • Seeing Space Security: The role of space situational awareness for verification of future space arms control »

Tuesday, November 10 at 10:00 am EST

Emerging LEO satellite operators are on the hunt for gateway earth stations in every region capable of supporting their massive bandwidth needs.  The first mover was OneWeb, which hit a wall with its Chapter 11 filing only to re-emerge with UK government backing and push ahead with its initial plan for a 650-satellite network while winning approval for 2,000.

Gateways are equally critical to the success of SpaceX, which has orbited more than 700 satellites and has permission to boost that number to 12,000, as well as Amazon Kuiper with its approved plan for more than 3,200 spacecraft and Telesat with its 298 satellites.  MEO is represented by SES Networks, which will boost its 20-satellite network to 32 with the introduction of mPower beginning in 2021. A number of teleport operators have signed agreements and deployed LEO and MEO gateways, and the opportunity for those with the right capabilities and attributes appears large.

In this webinar, teleport and LEO satellite operators will discuss the core requirements for a good gateway site.  Topics include unexpected challenges that arise at times from spectrum regulation, the rising pressure for 5G deployment, geography and infrastructure.  Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the decision factors that guide LEO operators, their potential to gain gateway business and the likely value of such business.

Speakers include:

  • Martin Coughlan, Business Development Director, Telstra
  • Jay Bloom, Senior Manager, Project Kuiper Ground Systems, Amazon Kuiper
  • Robert Bell, Executive Director, WTA (moderator)
