The economics of building and maintaining a large satellite constellation

November 16, 2023 EST

The space domain has seen an unprecedented surge in satellite deployments over the past decade. With over 7,000 satellites in orbit industry leaders are asking, what are the economics of satellite constellations? As the number of spacecraft grows so to will the need to understand the business model and value proposition of satellite constellation providers.
This week NSG will be joining other industry leaders to discuss the challenges and opportunities created by large satellite constellations. Join us virtually for the Silicon Valley Space Startups meetup on Thursday November 16th at 7pm Eastern. Here industry leaders answer questions about why we need and how to manage mega sat constellations, and how not to pollute the orbit.

Large constellations rely on smallsat technology which has drastically shifted the economics of space-based infrastructure. Today over 70% of smallsat deployments are tied to those larger constellation platforms. While this indicates the commercial viability of this technology, it is important to recognize the unique challenges facing constellation operators and those wanting to invest in this sector of the NewSpace Economy.
