Application optimized satellite + space platform lenses

April 18, 2025

Resolve Optics is a well-established designer and supplier of application optimized satellite and space platform lenses.

These lenses are essential components of cameras, optical instruments and sensors used to observe the Earth, explore space, and remotely conduct scientific research. They are designed to capture high-quality images in the harsh environment of space.

Designing and producing optics for use in space is a highly specialized area where expertise and experience are critical. Resolve Optics has been supplying lenses and optical systems for space applications for over 15 years. During this period, the company has acquired a considerable amount of knowledge with regards to the do’s and don’ts of designing for this harsh environment.

Rob Watkinson, the sales manager at Resolve Optics, said, “Commercially available camera lenses are generally not suitable for space applications because the optical material they are made from would increasingly suffer from radiation ‘browning’—meaning that image quality will deteriorate over the lifetime of a satellite or space platform. We have nearly two decades of experience and expertise in the design, testing and supply of low mass, high performance lenses using radiation resistant glass that meet the harsh demands of rocket launch and the temperature, cosmic radiation and vacuum challenges posed by the space environment.”

Rob continued, “The application optimized lens designs we create for commercial satellite developers and international space agencies are wide and varied. We are regularly tasked with designing and supplying powerful, high-resolution satellite lenses that enable the Earth to be viewed from space providing valuable data on weather patterns and the impact of climate change. Our space ready lenses are also being used to monitor the outside of a space platform, looking for any signs of damage caused by space debris or micro meteorites. As part of a vision system, our lenses have also been used to guide and dock payload craft visiting platforms such as the International Space Station.”
