Inside SDA, IRIS² + more: Novaspace unveils major space programs tracker

April 7, 2025

Novaspace has unveiled their Major Space Programs Tracker. This report debuts with a spotlight on a defining trend across the global space industry—an accelerating shift toward iterative tranche—and layer-based satellite deployment strategies.

Initially popularized by commercial constellations such as Starlink, this modular approach is now being adopted by major government-led programs, including the Space Development Agency’s (SDA) layered architecture and Europe’s IRIS² initiative.

By building and deploying satellites in tranches, space agencies can incorporate the latest technology and lessons learned into each new generation—resulting in more adaptable, resilient, and future-ready constellations. This strategy supports rapid innovation, mitigates deployment risks, and better positions programs to address evolving mission requirements.

The Major Space Programs Tracker is a new biannual market intelligence report developed by Novaspace. It delivers deep insight into the world’s largest and most complex government-led satellite programs, including SDA’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, IRIS², and Copernicus. Each edition explores program architecture, market addressability, contract awards, governance, and recent developments—offering a strategic lens into how these initiatives are structured and evolving.

Designed to support informed decision-making, the report helps stakeholders understand supply chains, monitor investment trends, and anticipate future opportunities. A free update is included six months after each release. The report is now available to Novaspace clients and subscribers.

An increasing number of satellite programs around the world adopt this iterative tranche/layer approach to satellite manufacturing and constellation deployment, which enables resiliency, flexibility, and faster innovation cycles, as exemplified by SDA Layers and IRIS²,” said Alexandre Najjar, Manager at Novaspace and lead author of the report.
