“Every collision in space causes yet more debris and even just a handful more could render space completely unusable.“
Vyoma, a startup company, aims to make space safer, and has partnered with Atos to help improve the safety of satellites in orbit. The partnership leverages Vyoma’s innovative solution for tracking objects in space and Atos’ secure data management system to enable satellite operators to more effectively avoid costly collisions and unnecessary maneuvering.
Vyoma’s solutions and services currently give satellite operators access to real-time tracking from a network of ground-based sensors located across the globe. Next year the network will be extended with space-based sensors. Vyoma couples these with its atmosphere-calibrated models that can make highly accurate trajectory predictions. Additional tracking data enables satellite operators to better determine when manoeuvres are necessary, ensuring their fleets remain safe and operational while avoiding costly manoeuvres when they are not required.
Atos has been supporting satellite operators for 20 years with a comprehensive portfolio of products and services. By using the data management solution provided by Atos, satellite operators can securely receive the accurate and timely space situational awareness data.
Dr. Stefan Frey, Co-Founder, Vyoma, commented: “Space is becoming increasingly crowded, making space situational awareness more important than ever. Every collision in space causes yet more debris and even just a handful more could render space completely unusable. By partnering with Atos and further developing our solution and services, we are working to give operators the tools they need to protect the space environment from further collisions.”
Klaus Schindler, Senior Account Manager, Atos, added: “Space Situational Awareness is extremely important, yet delivering the right information to keep the space environment safe has always been a challenge. Vyoma’s vision has the potential to revolutionize space situational awareness and could deliver huge value to everyone active in the space environment.”
Vyoma also wants to lower the threshold of what can be seen down to 1 cm. Even small objects carry a lot of energy and can cause unrepairable damage to satellites in space but cannot currently be tracked. With around one million objects of 1 cm and bigger, this will make a massive difference in ensuring space safety.
Vyoma recently won the Startup Space award at Satellite 2022 and is seeing a great deal of interest frompotential partners and investors following on from the startup pitch. With growing business inquiries and industry demand, Vyoma is actively recruiting more people to join the team.
