The Satcoms Innovation Group (SIG) has announced details for the sessions the organization will be running at the upcoming 2022 SatExpo Summit at CABSAT that will be in session from May 17th through 19th.
This year, the SatExpo Summit will address how we can, and must, exploit space in a responsible way to future proof life on Earth. The satellite industry has an important and impactful role to play in our future prosperity. SIG panel discussions will center around 5G, cloud enabled satellite networks and the impact of LEO satellites.
5G networks are rolling out across the globe, promising better connectivity for consumers and a wealth of potential applications. On the one hand, this is a potential competitive player for satellite — on the otherhand, satellite networks may be vital for keeping 5G running smoothly. A discussion will take place at the Summit on what 5G means for satellite as the 5G roll out gathers pace.
Satellite operators are going from MHz sales (buy, sell, lease bandwidth for point-to-point or point-to-multipoint) to bits – ethernet – point-to-point connectivity. There is an expectation of instant connectivity, however satellite involves long coordination processes, so the transition is therefore a challenge. At the Summit, key speakers will discuss the future of cloud-enabled satellite networks and how it will change the satellite landscape.
The LEO satellite market is projected to grow from $9.6 billion in 2021 to $19.8 billion by 2026. In two years, the number of active and defunct satellites in LEO has increased by over 50%, to about 5,000 (as of March 30, 2021). A final panel discussion will take place on the risks and challenges posed by LEO Satellites, both in terms of spectrum and space flight safety.
The discussions will be moderated by Helen Weedon, Managing Director, SIG. Key speakers include: Yasir Hassan, Arabsat; Alvaro Sanchez, Integrasys, Bruno Dupas, Kratos, and Alex Cacioni, representing the Space Data Association (SDA).
